I popped in to my store this noontime, and was getting ready to work, when a thought struck me. (Yes, I know, it’s unusual; but it does happen at times.) I normally keep my draw distance set to 128 meters, which is usually a good compromise between having good sight lines and the client taking forever to draw a scene in. Then I wondered: what would I see around me if I jumped to the roof of my skybox gallery and opened up the draw distance? What neighbors did I have here in Desire region, and around me on the borders [1]?
So up I went. I keep a landmark set for the roof, which makes it easy when I want to have some privacy for changing clothes and I don’t want to go back to the house. Then I opened out the draw to over 300 meters…and discovered just how private I really was!

That’s looking roughly north-northeast, at 500 m altitude. (These are actually over the border lines, in two other regions.) Goddess!! So much for privacy….
The good thing is that there’s rarely anybody there. But I think that, unless there’s nobody indicated on the mini-map, I’ll be changing clothes and clearing inventory somewhere more private. It makes me wonder just how many skyboxes there are around my (ground-based) house in Hrosskell. It’s again over the border in another region, but I know there’s a big penthouse box up there that’s usually busy as a club…with things that don’t usually go on in clubs. (I’ve flown up and overheard the conversations!)
You think you’re all by yourself in that skybox? Slap on some binoculars, friend, and take another look!

[1] For some arcane reason known only to the gods, I seem to rent places right on the border of regions. The only one I didn’t was my loft on the old Oasis Resort island, and that was because it was an estate island!

Oh my! I’m happy to say I have the sky to myself, but if one of my neighbors decided to erect one in my view, I’d raise mine higher (though if you’re renting, you may not have that option). The sky around my last home was getting pretty crowded, so I ended up renting land in a sparsely populated estate. Keep an eye on that mini-map :)
Agree on all of the above, and I may end up getting out the jack and going up another few hundred meters — after putting on my jetpack and scouting first, of course. (Or I can simply keep my draw distance set down to my normal, and everything will be just ducky (grin)).
