While agreeing with you that the collective intelligence of Linden Lab should be able to devise something that could reduce (if not eliminate) content theft, I'm really tempted to say that it's not necessarily as straightforward as it may seem. Computers can be puzzling things even to the experts; look at how much my desktop is currently puzzling the techs at my computer shop. (It's back in again, with a fried drive; more about that in an article.) Sometimes, and I'm being serious about this (not Dave Barry-serious, but really serious), there can even be a seemingly mystical aspect to them, that it takes a true Zen master of silicon to divine.

The answer will come. It just may not come in the time we want it to, or in the shape. For my part, I take a "wait and see" attitude to the situation, and choose to report on it more than editorialize on it. (Opinions are easy; reporting and analysis, like comedy, is tough.)

The grid is owned by LL; they actively encourage content creation. The LL business derives very real socio/commercial/economic benefit from content creation and the work of internationally-based content creators in a number of ways, not the least of which is the upload fee, which for a content creator does not take long to reach significant real $USD.

Presumably LL is staffed with a diverse group of professionals on salaries. Presumably there are departments with department heads who provide monthly reports to the executive. Presumably like any other business these reports would include the categories of income streams, eg: file and texture uploads. Presumably they file tax reports, which include these earnings?

So in short, LL is a significant company with significant international profile, actively encouraging residents on its grid to enhance its business and the overall experience for residents. Now wouldn't you think a company based in technology, with a professional staff of experts, one who owns the servers that this activity takes place on, a company with the technology to readily identify upload files and charges, can also work to resolve this issue more effectively?

I believe they can. It just takes commitment to get those massive technology-adept brains to address the issues. or are we saying the rip off artists have greater skills than all the knowledge on skills of LL put together?
