The Carnival is Over

(Warning:  picture-intensive, may take a little time to load, depending on your system)

The Carnival is Over 1

Say goodbye, my own true lover
As we sing a lover’s song

The Carnival is Over 5

How it breaks my heart to leave you
Now the carnival is gone

The Carnival is Over 10

High above, the dawn is waking
And my tears are falling rain
For the carnival is over
We may never meet again

The Carnival is Over 11

Like a drum, my heart was beating
And your kiss was sweet as wine

The Carnival is Over 14

But the joys of love are fleeting
For Pierrot and Columbine

The Carnival is Over 12

The Carnival is Over 8

Now the harbor light is calling
This will be our last goodbye
Though the carnival is over
I will love you till I die

The Carnival is Over 15

Though the carnival is over
I will love you…till I die

The story behind the song:

I’ve loved the Australian singing group known as the Seekers for years.  Though I know them better for “A World of Our Own” and “I Know I’ll Never Find Another You,” the song I use above (based on a Russian melody with English lyrics added to it) has perhaps been their most enduring.  It’s often sung as a closing song at events in Australia, fifty years after it was first a hit.  I was listening to it again the other day as I was driving to an errand, and it came to me that this would be a wonderful piece to try in Second Life.

Sadly, the costumes I’ve found to date that are specifically for Pierrot and Columbine (two of the standard characters in Italian commedia dell’arte, and a staple of Lenten carnival costumes) are very very old, and don’t appear from the photos to be some of the better system pieces out there.  But I remembered this lovely old standby from KWZ, one of the partners that ran the lost Omega Point region, and hauled it out again.  The quality of the tiered flexi skirt is excellent; it’s a pity that KWZ is no longer with us as far as I’ve found.  This is one of the few pieces of system-style clothing that I will keep with me until the sims sink beneath the virtual waves.  I’ve added some vintage rings and a newer suite from Lazuri (and removed the scarf that came with the costume), and used SLink feet and a pair of Promagic heels — and, of course, a domino mask.  (This is the end of the Lenten Carnival, after all; a mask is de rigueur.)  The only thing that’s missing is the man (sigh).  I’ll need to start putting out contacts for someone to pose with me when I want to do something that would work best as a duet.

I also did this shoot as a photo tour of Corona in Mignonne.  This is a really beautiful sim, built by Mina Pelazzi, and is worth a tour.  There is news (including a few signs about the sim) that she may be renting out the palace, or portions of it, for residence/role play, so you should contact Mina if you’re interested in such a thing.
