Between the Shadow and the Soul

LEA 8 wallpaper 2

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way

than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.

Pablo Neruda, One Hundred Love Sonnets, XVII

It’s a pity that I found this exhibit in LEA8 on the last day of the exhibit.  This is (soon to be was, sadly) a fantastic build that took artist Tahiti Rae seven weeks to assemble.  It’s intricately detailed, with lovely stained glass and statuary, and is dedicated to the story of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.  There is some interest in a document, supposedly written by Anne to Henry about thirteen days before her death — a book should be coming out on this in a few months — and this is what inspired Tahiti to this incredible build.

Truly, Henry had no luck in love.  His first wife, Catherine of Aragon, he married in part for love, and that love lasted until it became clear (to Henry, if not in fact) that he was not going to get a son by her.  His divorce of her split the English Church off from the authority of Rome, creating the Anglican Church that was the mother branch of the Episcopal Church I worship in today, and setting off a chain of events that reverberated down through the reigns of his descendants to the throne of England.  And, after Catherine, his five following marriages were more for politics, the desire of a male heir and for lust than for love.

Love is never an easy thing; that is why it is so highly prized in western culture.  Poems and songs are written for love, romance stories are thick on the ground, television and movies tell us love stories that can pass before our eyes and burn their way into our hearts.  Is this striving for an emotion that can be all too transitory an obsession on humanity’s part?  Perhaps — but some of the grandest parts of history and culture have come about because of it.  Here’s to it, then; if I’m in love with love, then may the affair never die.

I “love” this particular statue in the gardens surrounding the cathedral, and I also “love” these separates from PurpleMoon, available at the Vintage & Cool Fair running now.  Sixties flair (especially in the bell-bottom trousers), linked with Eighties sass in the zip-up bustier, and done in a hot sizzling red.  (Other colors are available.)  One note, though:  you may need SLink High feet to wear these, or at least some species of “high” mesh feet.  I recommended this to another Resident, and she told me afterward that her feet were sticking out from the cuffs.  I never did find out if she was wearing another brand of mesh feet, or was in system feet, but she told me she did not have SLink feet, and the sign says the pants are compatible with that brand.)
