Berry’s Monday Memes — Never Have I Ever

Finally, once again, it’s MEME TIME!!!!  Strawberry Singh is trying to reactivate her popular Monday Memes as of last week, though she can’t promise she’ll keep them up constantly.  I can’t blame her for that lack of promise — coming up with meme ideas is a lot of work, week after week!

This challenge is called “Never Have I Ever.”  It’s simple:  copy and answer the questions below, and remember to link back to Berry’s article, so she knows you’re playing along.

See the questions, and my answers, on the next page!

“Starring…Loretta Young!”

Loretta Young 1

Strawberry Singh’s latest Monday Meme came along at a perfect time; I was working on this concept anyway after finding a photo on Pinterest I’d loved, and so why not take advantage of it?  I never saw The Loretta Young Show when I was a child, but the reputation of it and its star has come down through the sixty years since it premiered on NBC.

Find out more about this show on the next page.

Berry’s Monday Meme — Then and Now

Writing from Orlando, Florida:

Meme Time again — fear and tremble, all ye mortals!

No, not really; Berry Singh actually comes up with some interesting things, and each one gives us blog fodder to keep these voracious pages filled.  This week’s Monday Meme gives us a chance to look back for a time, something we should do every once in a while to remember where we came from.  Simply take two pictures from your blog — one from the earliest articles you’ve written, and one from recently, and let’s see how much times have changed for you.  Preferably the first and most recent photo of you, it should be noted, but, as you’ll see below, I had to be a little more flexible.

Nadirra, by Ginny Talamasca

Milena by Ginny Talamasca

For me, finding a few early photos wasn’t difficult — it was choosing one I’d like to show you!  Lord, I was rough back then, still learning the craft (of which I am by no means a perfect mistress yet).  And also getting a decent face shot!  So I’m including two from the early days, both of me in Ginny Talamasca gowns that were favorites for a time.  I wasn’t taking closeups very often back then, until my first Hair Fair.  Knowing how far we’ve come since those early days of system shirts and flexi prims and “photo-realistic” skins, well, (shudder, grin).

My Oscar Gown 5

And so here we are today (from my OFPC “final update” gown).  It looked pretty good back then; but oh, how it looks today!  So many changes and improvements have come along, some of which everyone said Predicted the Imminent Death of Second Life.  And yet here we are, more than ten years down the road for the Grid and approaching eight for me personally.  Where’s it gonna go from here?

(Note to Berry and others:  I’ll do a proper side-by-side once I get home and get a few minutes.  Right now, I’m without all my tools, or the ability to use them well if I added them to this laptop.)

Berry’s Monday Memes — Avatar Transformation

Written en route to Orlando, Florida:

Something different 2

It’s Meme Time again!!!

From Strawberry Singh, on March 2 — “Transform your avatar completely so that even your friends wouldn’t recognize you.”

For me, and my love of alien looks, this wasn’t difficult at all, at least in the gross sense.  I pulled out one of the shapes I don’t often wear, which I use for my character of Keiko in my stories, and proceeded to transform her from the norm to something more…exotic.  I did try to use mostly recent items, so you’ll see these (if still available) at some of the current events.  I’m sorry, but I’ve quite forgotten which ones to go to; but contacting the creators should help.

Something different 3

The details:

Berry’s Monday Memes: Have you ever SecondLifed?

There should be a (sic) beside that “SecondLifed,” but I digress….  Strawberry Singh’s latest Monday Meme is a set of light questions, incredibly easy and fun to answer.  Give it a shot yourself!  Just remember to link back to Berry’s original article, so others can get to your answers.

Berry’s Monday Memes — Yearbook Daze

Singing Radiohead at the top of our lungs
With the boom box blaring as we’re falling in love
Got a bottle of whatever, but it’s getting us drunk
Singing here’s to never growing up

— Avril Lavigne

For Berry Singh’s new Monday Meme — the Yearbook Photo Challenge.  No, this is not how I looked back in the day; my parents would have utterly destroyed me, no matter how much they loved me.  (Anyway, I graduated in 1976, and we were very red, white and blue that year.)  But I haven’t seen the punk rebel in the challenge yet, so I figured someone needed to do it!

Berry’s Book Meme

Book meme

Strawberry Singh does it again.  Her Monday Meme this week is based around books.  And so:

  1. Are you a bookworm?  Yes!
  2. Which do you prefer: hardcover, paperback or electronic?  No particular preference, although I’m carrying my Nook more than a bound book these days.  I can carry hundreds of books in a tablet, including the stories that I write, all collected together.  I’ve just recently received four books from online booksellers, though, including replacements for ragged copies of Dorothy Sayers’ translations of Dante’s Commedia.
  3. Which book is your favorite?  That’s always a tricky thing, as it changes from time to time; the most consistent one, though, is probably Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
  4. Which children’s book is your favorite?  Also difficult, due to the time passed.  But I’ve been thinking lately of a book that was read to us back in 2nd grade lo these many moons ago:  Paddle-to-the-Sea by Holling Clancy Holling, which gave me a true appreciation for the world of the Great Lakes — not just my home state of Michigan, but the entire watershed from Lake Nipigon, far above Thunder Bay, down to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence
  5. What’s the last book you’ve read?  Concealed in Death by J. D. Robb
  6. Name your top five favorite writers:  More than five, but I can’t really cut it down (grin):J. R. R. Tolkien, Mercedes Lackey, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Anne McCaffrey, Dante, Agatha Christie, David Weber
  7. Name a book that had a strong impact on you:  R. F. Delderfield’s To Serve Them All My Days.  I was turned on to it by the Masterpiece Theatre production long ago, and enjoyed it immensely while in college.  If there were any book that might have turned me into a teacher instead of a librarian and bookseller, this would have been it.
  8. Favorite & least favorite book genres?  Mystery / romance
  9. Favorite & least favorite book-to-movie adaptions?  The Lord of the Rings / The Count of Monte Cristo (Richard Chamberlain version; too many liberties with it)
  10. Have you ever bought a book based on the cover alone?  Not that I can recall, but it’s come close at times.
  11. Where do you usually buy your books?  When I don’t buy them on my Nook, I usually get them at Barnes & Noble.  (I get an employee discount, after all!  Although I also have a Membership; my discount comes off the list price, while the Membership works on sales as well.)
  12. Do you go to the library?  Yes
  13. How many books do you own?  Not as many as in the past, as I’ve had to clean off my shelves periodically at a used book store.  In the neighborhood of 300-500 books now, though, including E-books on the family Nooks.
  14. If you were to write a book about Second Life, which topic would you focus on?  What I specialize in here on the blog:  photography and fashion.

Practical Jokes for Berry Singh

Fear and tremble, all ye mortals, for it’s —

Strawberry Singh has put up her latest Monday Meme, and the request is for you to share any practical jokes committed by or to you in world, or involving your in-world Plurk/Facebook/etc. friends.  I learn here that Berry is definitely an easy target, and I’ll have to consider this for April.  (Evil smile)

You can get the joke after the break.

Berry’s Monday Meme — Weird Questions

me, raw

Finally catching my breath, and I think it’s my turn to take on Strawberry Singh’s recent Monday Meme.  To wit:

  1. Which was the last sim you visited? (Other than your home)  I’m currently sitting in one of the SL10B sims.
  2. Does your avatar look like the real you?  Good Ghod, no; and you should be glad of that!
  3. Do you wear underwear/panties underneath your clothing when out and about on the grid?  It depends on if I remember to grab them when I’m putting on the clothes.  But if I’m wearing them, they get saved into the outfit.  I really don’t want anyone looking up my skirt, and there, sadly, are some who will go camming up your skirt.  I’m not anatomically correct in that region, shall we say, but I don’t intend to encourage any such things anyway.
  4. If you won a million linden dollars, what would be the first thing you buy in world?  Hmmm….  I’m tempted to say I’d buy my own sim.  I’d love to have the room to play in like that, and set it up as I choose.
  5. Have you ever bought something in SL and then realized afterwards that you had already owned it from before?  A few things like that, but it’s usually a case of I stumble on them when cleaning out my inventory.  I think it was Gidge Uriza, though, who said that such was a compliment to the designer!  (If nothing else, the makers will enjoy the money….)
  6. Have you ever done anything in Second Life that would be considered illegal in real life?  Never.  I’ve never even shot anybody, not even with a watermelon gun (grin).
  7. If you could go out on a date with any other avatar, who would it be? Nobody.  I’m contentedly married RL, and prefer to avoid temptations.
  8. Who, in your opinion, was the greatest avatar to ever slive?  Hoofe, there’s a good one….  I’ll have to take a pass on this.
  9. What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done inworld?  Teleporting in to a store without a top or pants on, back in the pre-mesh days.  With mesh alphas, it’s not so big a thing anymore, but prior to 2012, it was easy to do if you weren’t thinking what control you were clicking on.
  10. If your avatar had a mind of its own, what do you think it would say to you?  “Stop leaving me standing on these post stands for an hour at a time!”
