‘Where are you going, Master?’ cried Sam, though at last he understood what was happening.

‘To the Havens, Sam,’ said Frodo.

‘And I can’t come.’

‘No, Sam. Not yet, anyway, not further than the Havens ….’

….

… and so they rode down at last to Mithlond, to the Grey Havens in the long Firth of Lune ….

Wild Mountain Thyme

Ohh, the summer time is coming
And the leaves are sweetly turning
And the wild mountain thyme
Blooms around the purple heather
Will you go, laddie go?

And we’ll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the purple heather
Will you go, laddie go?

If my true love will not go
I will surely find another
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the purple heather
Will you go, laddie go?

And we’ll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the purple heather
Will you go, laddie go?

Teleport to Isles of Scotland

People of the Heart – Lovers

Zana Sherman checked herself over a final time in the mirrored closet door of her bedroom in her university apartment. Everything was nicely in place, everything was covered that needed to be, and the tips and tricks she had picked up from her mother’s makeup artists at The Land of Fantasy Theatre had allowed her to “put on her face” in under 10 minutes. Well, that and a ‘borg’s speed and accuracy, she added with a smile. Never let it be said there aren’t any advantages to being a member of this species.

She tapped at the panel, switching its surface back to a door instead of a mirror, grabbed her ident fold and slid it into a carry-pocket on the inside of a feathered sleeve, dabbed a few drops of cologne on her throat, and swung out of the bedroom. Thankfully, the 48th Century C. E. didn’t require university students to live in hovels; everyone had a personal set of living and sleeping rooms, with a mini-foodsynth for eating. It still wasn’t luxurious … especially compared to what Zana was used to at home … but it put a decently comfortable roof over one’s head, and good enough food, if not up to the same standard as, say, La Paloma Azul in downtown Vidran. Each living room in the complex even had an electric fireplace.

Elegant Fallout

September 3, 1960, another dimension ….

“Radio’s off; good … not that it was of much use anyway. And the water and air pumps are shut off, too ….”

“I suppose I should shut the doors. At least Ma would have said to do that; but nobody else is coming down here any more, so I’ll leave ’em for the critters to borrow.”

Story Conference

A few days ago, Jem gave me a shout and asked to meet me at my place to talk blog with the others. Diana and Conan couldn’t make it, but Morgan could, and so we went up to my office at the World-Wide Headquarters of a Blog Known As Around the Grid. “So, you got an idea?” I asked as we got comfortable.

“No,” Jem said. “I have a complaint. We’re missing something in the blog.”

Stood Up Again

Men don’t settle down because of the right woman. They settle down because they are finally ready for it.

Layover

Harper hasn’t written much about Zana Sherman as a grown adult yet in her Ariel Sherman stories; she’s mainly looking at Zana’s early years when she puts the girl in one of her Ariel stories.  But she does have one story, where she has Zana in her twenties appearing between the main sections of her as a child, getting ready to watch a documentary of her life as the first naturally-born cyborg.   (It’s a long story; she’s outlined it for me, so ask Harper for the details.)  When she wants a photo of Zana as an adult, Harper comes to me.

Sarariwoman, also known as the Working Stiff

Let the river run
Let all the dreamers
Wake the nation
Come, the new Jerusalem

Silver cities rise
The morning lights
The streets that meet them
And sirens call them on
With a song

Three Gildas

Long-time readers of the blog will know that I’ve always had a thing for the famous strapless gown worn by Rita Hayworth in Gilda.  (I must, because I’ve done two articles on the gown before, and I thought I’d shared a third from Harper Beresford’s old blog, A Passion for Virtual Fashion.)

Well, others love that gown, too.  And it’s come back … though it may be a little difficult to pick up right now.  Valentina E. has done a fresh recreation of the Jean Louis confection, down to the bow on the hip and the shoulder-length evening gloves, and made it available at the Rewind 40s Pin-up event in several colors (gloves are a separate purchase).  Each of us — Diana, myself and Jem — are interpreting it as we wish.  However …,

… it seems that this round of Rewind has closed down early.  When I went back to check the landmark — and all three of us have done so since — the region keeps bouncing us.  What I’d encourage you to do is to send notecards to valentinaevangelista (Valentina E. is her screen name), urging her to move the gowns into the main shop as soon as possible.  This gown is just too pretty to not have in your collection, and to wear regularly to Frank’s or similar clubs!

The Highest of Heels and a Beautiful Hat

Highest of Heels and a Beautiful Hat 2

“If they ever do my life story, whoever plays me needs lots of hair color and high heels.”

— Charlize Theron

The way you wear your hat,
The way you sip your tea,
The memory of all that —
No, no! They can’t take that away from me!

— Ira Gershwin (lyricist), “They Can’t Take That Away From Me”
