Moniq Salamander put together a brilliant little piece of casual photography that is so lifelike, I had to feature it here.  According to Moniq,

i used a prop by PNP Props and Poses, which comes with the clothes on the hangers and shelves, all i had to do was rezz some of the less primmy shoes in my inventory, to make the setting look even more real :)

I wasn’t planning on doing another column so quickly; but I came across this one today, and I couldn’t resist. You don’t usually see a model in most SL photography from the back, after all. Karro Lean shows here that sometimes the back view is as pretty as the front. And who doesn’t enjoy the occasional backless evening gown…?

Some may wonder how I find so many great photos to talk about here in Contact Sheet.  The simple answer is very simple and obvious; I hang out on Flickr or Koinup.

The longer story:  Like many Flickr/Koinup users, I’ve developed a pool of favorite “contact” photographers, whose work I follow pretty regularly — more so on Flickr than Koinup for some reason.  It’s especially easy on Flickr; you can have the Yahoo system send you automatic messages whenever one of your contacts adds material to their photo stream.  I believe they check automatically every 30-60 minutes, and will combine updates into one message if several contacts have updated in a given period.  Koinup is a little more complicated in one sense; you subscribe to an RSS feed for each contact.  However, you can collect the feeds in Thunderbird (my E-mail client) for easier viewing.

To get to the new people, I scrounge through groups.  You share and publicize your own work through the platforms’ groups, of course; I belong to or administer 230 groups on Flickr, and nearly 200 on Koinup.  I don’t go through all those groups, of course, otherwise I wouldn’t get anything else done; and I do want a life or two here, you know.  But, when I see something that intrigues me, I’ll check at least a few of the groups the artist has placed it in to see if there’s any more stuff that catches my eye from someone I haven’t run into before.  I’ve added 5 or 10 people to my pool in recent days in this manner.

For instance, here are a few fashion shots from Kidman Latte, a Resident since 2008, not long after I arrived in Second Life, but a poster in quantity on Flickr only since this past January.  I’ve just now encountered here work, and her style is excellent!

One of the things that can make a great photograph is a sense of motion.  Movement is a factor of life, as is change; indeed, movement is one of the things that often causes change to happen.  Great pictures often contain a dynamism to them, an element of light or positioning or some other factor that instills the perception of motion into the photograph.  Take a look at the following small collection and see for yourself.  (Click on the thumbnails for the full-size photo at Flickr or Koinup.)

=====

For the final special edition of Contact Sheet focusing on new Koinup talent, here are two newcomers (to the column) with excellent grasps of light and color and their uses.  First, take a look at these samples from “Lanay” that I’m adding to the group.  (Click each thumbnail for the Koinup page.)

These pictures glow like jewels and radiate color and interest to the eye, drawing you into the composition.  Lanay is a long-time photographer, judging by the size of her portfolio, but I wish I’d found these long ago.

=====

And second, “Sythos” is very much a newcomer at this stage, with only some 100 pieces on Koinup — but he looks to have a good grasp of the power of the camera.  He seems fascinated by the potentials around the new vampire RPG sim of Venexia, but that isn’t the end of his work.

=====

It’s been a pleasure featuring so much talent over this past month, and I thank Pier for suggesting this series of columns.

This column may be the last one before the fourth anniversary of Around the Grid, so I still haven’t caught up yet with where I was planning on being.  But I’m getting there!  For the next-to-last special Koinup edition, I have six newcomers and a seventh from a previous artist that I just can’t ignore.

=====

First, a double by Aelin Quan, which I consider to be something of a diptych as they have been worked in post-processing the same way from appearances.  They give the same feeling that I can’t quantify, can’t define, but it’s something that speaks to me.  That’s what is vital.

More after the break….

How about a little piece of whimsy for a Monday morning to get you started, or give a bit of a lift for anyone not in North America?  This photo, by “NirvanaMist,” takes us to the beach.  But the company with us is…interesting:

NirvanaMist is a new addition to the Koinup membership, with only a few pages of work yet at this writing.  There is potential here, though; witness this other piece I selected, a nude titled Misty in Blue.  It’s early days yet, but I think we may have someone starting to develop their talent, and I hope you’ll encourage Nirvana by stopping by and commenting.

I wrestle with alpha-channel work.  I’m still trying to get consistent results out of GIMP, and I wasn’t much better with my beloved Paint Shop Pro.  So I respect those who can pull off the trick; and Dax Dover has done this with a little piece on her Flickr stream that caught my eye.  Here is just a slice of it as a teaser; you’ll need to go to the page to get the rest (evil grin).

Seems fairly ordinary, doesn’t it?  Wait until you see who’s reaching for Dax’s hand.  Not only that, but she’s added in shadows for both herself and…well, you’ll just have to see!

Ruriko Bracken, one of the finer models and photographers on the Grid, has been featured before in Contact Sheet, and has placed highly in the past in my two Oscar Fashion Photo Contests.  Here is her latest piece of work, and this and the closeup in the next photo in her Flickr stream brought to mind a favorite song done by Celtic Woman during their second PBS concert, “Spanish Lady”:

As I came back through Dublin City
At the hour of half past eight
Who should I spy but the Spanish lady
Brushing her hair in the broad daylight
First she tossed it, then she brushed it
On her lap was a silver comb
In all my life I ne’er did see
A maid so fair since I did roam

Portrait photographs can be underappreciated.  What artistry is there in taking a closeup shot of a person’s face?  But the truth is, there is a lot more to it than that.  The clothing of the model, the appearance, the lighting, and other factors contribute to the quality of the final product.

You can control many of these factors as the photographer.  But one major item, the model, is often in the lap of the gods.  In this case, “photoliv42” on Koinup got extraordinarily lucky:  a client with wonderful taste in clothing and hair, and a green-eyed face alight with mystery and mischief.  photoliv42 added in some post-processing to enhance the appearance, and you have these below.  I’m making them as small as this because I want you to go photoliv42’s pages and admire them in all their glory, then click on lots of like buttons (grin).  To get there, click on the thumbnails, and I hope you enjoy as much as I do.
