2014 Mystic Realms Faire

Mystic Realms

Check out the new Mystic Realms Faire, running between October 10 and 26.  There’s lots of goodies to tempt you, including a fantastic new sari from Zaara and a beautiful futuristic gown from [sYs].  I’ve done my shopping already, dashing through yesterday during the bloggers’ preview; I may have a chance Monday to start going through the bags and see how things look.

Around the Fantasy Faire

Some pictures I took while running around this year’s Fantasy Faire — which, according to Daniel Voyager, has pulled in well over L$5.5 million for this year’s American Cancer Society Relay for Life.  You may want to check the SLurls and see if the regions are still up, if you didn’t take the time to tour them before; they were still open yesterday as I tried to finish my own tour.

Some Thoughts On Butterflies

Moss covered paths between scarlet peonies,
Pale jade mountains fill your rustic windows.
I envy you, drunk with flowers,
Butterflies swirling in your dreams.
— Ch’ien Ch’i, translated by Kenneth Rexroth

It is blue-butterfly day here in spring,
And with these sky-flakes down in flurry on flurry
There is more unmixed color on the wing
Than flowers will show for days unless they hurry.

But these are flowers that fly and all but sing:
And now from having ridden out desire
They lie closed over in the wind and cling
Where wheels have freshly sliced the April mire.
— Robert Frost, “Blue-Butterfly Day”

Gray sail against the sky,
Gray butterfly!
Have you a dream for going.
Or are you the blind wind’s blowing?
— Dana Burnet, “A Sail at Twilight”

…Don’t you see

That we are worms, whose insignificance
Lives but to form the angelic butterfly
That flits to judgement naked of defence?
— Dante, The Divine Comedy: Purgatory, Canto X (Sayers translation)

Lady Frost

GasOven produces a winter fashion piece that is sparkling and mystical, like the Snow Queen.  A delightful confection, and I hope you’ll follow through to the rest of her original article, and then comment on it!

Buuuuurrrrrrrr!  It’s getting cold out there!  I was in a watery mood there for a while when it came to images.  Now, I suppose I’m moving on to water in another state.  It’s getting icy around Second Life and I think it’s just gorgeous!  Luckily, there are places like Alirium where it’s always a frosty wonderland!  I recommend it if you’re looking to shoot some beautiful, wintery pictures this season ^^

Second Life imagery has been especially fun for me lately.  I don’t know what it is but lately I’ve been in love with our beautiful, little, digital world.  Can you believe how creative some of our residents are?  It’s fabulous!  Plus, so many sims are changing over to their seasonal appearances.  It all feels so magical!

Speaking of magic, sales are very magical!  Right now The White Armory is having a great sale where many of their gowns are…

Château de la Lune

Come when the nights are bright with stars
Or come when the moon is mellow;
Come when the sun his golden bars
Drops on the hay-field yellow.
Come in the twilight soft and gray,
Come in the night or come in the day,
Come, O love, whene’er you may,
And you are welcome, welcome.

— From Invitation to Love by Paul Laurence Dunbar

The N’dali (via A Passion for Virtual Fashion)

Writing from Battle Creek, Michigan:

I’ve had to focus resources on other things besides the computer for a while, so my tower isn’t repaired yet.  (I hope I get it repaired in time to pay my rents in world!)  Once again I’m borrowing one of the family netbooks, which can’t run Second Life, to put something up on the blog and keep it alive.

But what I’m putting up is fabulous. Take a look at this encyclopedia entry from Harper Beresford!

The N'dali “The N’dali of the temperate forests and hills of Southern Peninsula of Melanasia are an independent tribe of traders and craftspeople. They are most noted for their fine metalwork and technology in working with exotic creature skins and feathers such as those of the phoenix and dragon. Their people are homogenous with genetic markers such as pale fine caucasian skin, thick dark black hair and most amazingly, golden eyes, which appear ubiquitousl … Read More

Tales from Insilico — Suffering for Her Art

Caution:  some situations in this story, and some pictures involving nudity, should be considered NSFW/NSS

Jadzia lay curled up on the cot in the side room, seriously regretting every recent moment of her existence. This has to be the last damned time, she thought to herself as the nausea began rising up again.  As she edged her head over the side of the cot to find the hurl bucket, her mind went over the past twenty-seven hours of station time….

It had been over three months since she had finally paid off the “photo-etched” skin mod she had obtained at a “black” biolab; but the attention she had hoped for from talent scouts had never come.  Jadzia knew they were jaded in appetite, of course; they had seen it all and then some, it seemed, and you really had to be maybe a parsec out there now to even catch a glimpse from them, let alone get the attention of an agent.  But she thought this mod would have done it for sure!

There was only one thing for it — to try again, or to go back to selling herself in a different way.  Being a courtesan meant peddling her body, or at least certain portions of it, but being Shayana had paid the bills.  And she had been good at it, too, pleasuring both herself and her clients, and acquiring something of a reputation for it.  But you could only do so much whoring before something started seeping into your soul.  Remembering the peace she had felt that night in Atonement, the abandoned church-turned-club, Jadzia’s small core of self-pride asserted itself, and she resolved to try one more time.  She booked the appointment — not as obviously as calling a more reputable clinic to “set up an appointment,” of course — and showed up the night specified.

SL Hallowe’en — Olympian Oracle

Far-seeing Sybil, forever hidden,
Come out of your cave at last
And speak to us in the poet’s voice
the voice of the fourth person singular
the voice of the inscrutable future
the voice of the people mixed
with a wild soft laughter–
And give us new dreams to dream,
Give us new myths to live by!

From “To the Oracle at Delphi”
Lawrence Ferlinghetti

I Am Imix, Primal Mother.
Still, dark womb of the patterned potential of becoming,
sacred, interstellar genesis, I Am.
Nourishing, fertile abyss, I birth you.
Benevolent, my mighty cauldron of primal waters,
enveloping the living seed.
Eternal is my embrace.

From “Imix”
Ariel Spilsbury and Michael Bryner

  • Hair, jewelry, staff: Tekeli-li Inanna (all scripted; and be prepared for max lag if you dare to wear all of these!  You can mod the pieces, though, so you can shut off the scripts once you have the colors set as you wish.)  (Tekelili Tantalus)

Dark shots were made with Euphoria realm WindLight setting; this may be available standard on the current release of Emerald Viewer.  Face lit with FaceFX face light.

I photographed this spread at the Temple of Zeus in Virtual Olympia, a remarkable sim which is part of a complex of Periclean Greece sims set up for combat systems.  The temple, including its recreation of the famous statue of Zeus from the temple at RL Olympia, a work of art now lost to the world, was built by Qeux Serge over two months of work, according to Socrates Dionysus, my contact.  Be sure to stop by and look at the region; but remember to observe the rules of the sim, and keep in mind that these regions are combat enabled.  That may be forbidden in Olympia, but be aware of the possibility.
