Many of you probably heard today of the death of Kenny Rogers. The singer was most known today for his solo country singles from the time of “The Gambler” forward, and his duet with Dolly Parton, “Islands in the Stream.” But Kenny had a career dating from the Sixties, when he started with The New Christy Minstrels during the later part of the Folk Revival.

Rogers eventually left the Minstrels, along with a few other members, and founded The First Edition. The group was never a rock sensation, but they did score two good hits: “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In” … and “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town,” the much more successful of the two.

Alsatian Kidd worked fast today, and put this photo together with help from another avatar. A fantastic tribute to an excellent singer.

Morgan's Morning Mocha Meditations

Whew. After the past three or four days, I deserve this break moment. The only thing missing is a Milano cookie.

Dawn Vigil

This well and building are only part of a lovely build called Otter Cove, with lots of opportunities for photography. See below for the landmark.

Still half asleep, I sought the hill and found
My vantage place, then stood a moment there
To probe the wind for some familiar sound;
But no vibrtation moved along the air,
And I learned nothing that I did not know
From the far east’s faint conglomerate glow.

A lovely build deserves a lovely dress. This spring outfit from Meva fits the need quite nicely!

I asked the stars, what destiny awaits
Beyond this dark incalculable night? …
And suddenly, incredibly, the gates
Of morning opened to approaching light;
Then, somewhere near, a bird began to sing —
And my heart heard the whole world listening.

Carl John Bostelmann, “Dawn Vigil”
Poetry (XLII:5) August 1933, p. 261

No Escape

It appears there’s no escaping the coronavirus, even in Second Life. I was visiting the new round of The Mens Dept, and I found this for sale … a set of statues and décor for an “Anti Coronavirus Disinfection Team.” There could be a bit of black humour here, reflecting the times we’re passing through; but it appears the maker is serious as well. They say that 100% of profit will be used “for buying real protective suit for medical institution.” (Sic) (I do NOT know if this is real or not, so use your judgement before purchasing. CB)

In reality, we do need to exercise some concern over what’s coming. The thing is to do it without jumping over the cliff edge like a lemming supposedly does. (They don’t.) Do the commonsense things you’re supposed to do anyway as part of a proper health regimen — wash your hands thoroughly, don’t cough into the open, and don’t leave your home if you feel any symptoms — will all help tremendously. These won’t stop the spread, but they’ll slow things down tremendously, to where public health can cope far easier with the infection.

Update: I didn’t think of this before, but here’s the page from the Public Health Agency of Canada on current conditions and recommendations. And, in courtesy to the American readers, here’s the same information from the Centers for Disease Control.

Grotesquerie

“… [I]n the absence of sensory information, the imagination always tends to the grotesque.”

Patrick McGrath

I’ve been doing a little cleanup in my Inventory, and found this gown. It’s vintage now, along with the hair and fur, but worth sharing in some photos.

Secret Gardens

Great grandfather’s farm is still there
But it isn’t the same ….

Judy Collins, “Secret Gardens”

=====

Some of my fondest memories are of a barn, such as the one you can just make out behind me here. After all, I may be much a product of cities and college these days, but I started out as a country girl in rural Michigan.

French Quarter Fun

“Mardi Gras, baby. Mardi Gras. Time when all manner of weird shit cuts loose and parties down.”

We were walking down Bourbon Street the other night, and came across this sign outside the Absinthe Cafe. Can’t think of a better argument in favor of bacon, can you …?

Blue Boogie

At last! I’ve been hunting for a place to shoot the photos for this article, but I just wasn’t happy with anywhere I found for a party dress like this. I finally went to the photo studio Harper keeps hidden away on her island, and here I am.

Port Babbage Winter

I decided to catch up on some of the classic old locations again, and so made a visit to Port Babbage. I’ve never been much for steampunk; but I have to say that the Babbage regions are fascinating … if smoggy (lol).

I wasn’t quite in costume. Then again, as I said, I’m not that into steampunk; and anyway, as I understand, Port Babbage and Caledon aren’t that fussy on outtatime visitors.
